SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 274

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to honor Carl Idlebird, who was recently inducted into the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, In his three decades as the band director at Somerville High School, Carl Idlebird, affectionately known as "Mr. I" at school, has led the Yegua Band program to top honors at countless competitions and positively impacted the lives of thousands of students; and

WHEREAS, Mr. I's passion for music began when he joined the school band while in sixth grade at Bryan Independent School District; he earned accolades while participating in band during high school, and he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in music education from Sam Houston State University; after beginning his teaching career, he later received a master's degree in music theory and composition; and

WHEREAS, Carl Idlebird first became a band director at A&M Consolidated School, and after 12 years, he transferred and began his acclaimed tenure to Somerville Independent School District; almost every year in the 30 years since, the Yegua Band has earned trophies and first division honors in University Interscholastic League marching, concert, and sightreading competitions, as well as many top 10 finishes at the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series and at other state band contests; and

WHEREAS, Fourteen Somerville students have made the all-state band under their astute director's instruction, and Mr. I's daily enthusiasm for musical composition and teaching motivates his students to rise to any challenge and to pursue their passion for music or other endeavors; through his dedication, encouragement, and mentorship, he has left an indelible mark on Somerville High School and on the lives of countless young people, and he is truly deserving of his induction into the ATSSB Hall of Fame Class of 2025; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th Legislature, hereby commend Carl Idlebird on earning this honor and on his years of service to students in the Lone Star State and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
