R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
  passing of David Lawrence Murphy of Atlanta on April 6, 2025, at the
  age of 91; and
         WHEREAS, The son of John and Gladys Murphy, David Murphy was
  born in Texarkana on February 4, 1934, and he grew up with the
  companionship of four siblings, Jean, Robert, Kenneth, and
  Elizabeth; his family resided in Delaware and California during his
  youth before returning to Texas and settling in Bloomburg, where he
  graduated from high school in 1953; answering his nation's call to
  duty, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany; and
         WHEREAS, Following his discharge, Mr. Murphy wed his
  sweetheart, the former Sarah Stanley, on June 18, 1955, and the
  couple shared a rewarding marriage that spanned 65 years until her
  passing; he took great pride in their five children, Sharon, Kay,
  David, Suzanne, and Paul, and through the years, he had the pleasure
  of seeing his cherished family grow to include 15 grandchildren,
  Chad, Katy, Ryan, Chelsey, Nicole, Quin, Carly, Chloe, Aris, Sadie,
  Brenna, Kiersten, Allison, Breanne, and Logan, as well as 25
  great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy worked for Shell Oil Company in Pasadena
  while earning a bachelor's degree from East Texas State College,
  and he subsequently embarked on a remarkable 53-year career as a
  teacher and coach; over the years, he coached basketball, football,
  baseball, tennis, and track, and he made a positive difference in
  the lives of countless students; among the many highlights of his
  career, he was inducted into the Western Junior College Athletic
  Conference Hall of Fame in 2005, after coaching women's basketball
  at Frank Phillips College; and
         WHEREAS, In his later years, Mr. Murphy became an avid
  gardener, and he enjoyed tending to his many rosebushes; he also
  took pleasure in listening to audiobooks, completing jigsaw
  puzzles, and spending time with his grandchildren and
  great-grandchildren; a man of faith, he was a member of First
  Baptist Church Atlanta; and
         WHEREAS, Although David Murphy is deeply missed, he has left
  his family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will
  forever treasure; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
  hereby pay tribute to the life of David Lawrence Murphy and extend
  sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of David Murphy.
