James Muns |
|
|
WHEREAS, James N. Muns, esteemed former mayor of Plano and a |
|
friend to many, passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 93; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born in Sweetwater on January 6, 1932, James Muns |
|
was the son of Elvie and Claude Muns; he earned his bachelor's |
|
degree in business administration from Abilene Christian |
|
University, where he was a proud member of the undefeated 1950 |
|
Wildcat football team; in 1953, he joined Wyatt Food Stores, and |
|
after managing supermarkets in Fort Worth, he became personnel |
|
director and vice president of operations; he was named president |
|
of the company in 1978, and over the next decade, he guided its |
|
expansion to more than 120 locations across 9 states; he sold the |
|
business in 1988 and launched a venture capital and investment |
|
firm, Muns Enterprises L.P., specializing in real estate-related |
|
projects; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, James Muns was deeply committed to his community; |
|
from 1981 to 1987, he served on the Plano City Council, and he was |
|
elected mayor in 1992; during his four years in office, he worked |
|
tirelessly to improve quality of life for area residents; under |
|
his leadership, Plano was recognized with a prestigious |
|
All-America City Award; he further served as a director of the |
|
North Texas Commission, as chair of the Presbyterian Hospital |
|
Plano board, and as a member of the Presbyterian Hospital |
|
Foundation board; in 1995, he was selected as the Plano Citizen |
|
of the Year; sustained by a strong faith, he was an elder of |
|
Walnut Hill Church of Christ in Dallas and Pitman Creek Church of |
|
Christ in Plano; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Above all, James Muns was devoted to his family; |
|
he shared a beautiful marriage that spanned more than seven |
|
decades with his wife, Betty Bell Muns, until her passing in |
|
2024, and he took great pride in their four children, Kathy, |
|
Marla, Greg, and John, and in their many grandchildren and |
|
great-grandchildren; in his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, |
|
skiing, traveling, and exploring the arts, especially music and |
|
woodworking, and he loved handcrafting unique, heirloom |
|
furniture for his family and friends; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, James Muns gave freely of his time and expertise |
|
to better his community, and although he is deeply missed by |
|
those he left behind, his contributions will be remembered for |
|
years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of James N. Muns and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
|
children, Katharine Muns Spencer and her husband, Clark, Marla |
|
Muns, Dr. Greg Muns and his wife, Laurie, and John Muns and his |
|
wife, Joa; to his 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; |
|
and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
this day, it do so in memory of James Muns. |
