Doris Walters |
|
|
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew |
|
to a close with the passing of Doris Geneva Walters of Texarkana |
|
on March 22, 2025, at the age of 100; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Walter and Lucille Walters, Doris |
|
Walters was born in Atlanta on January 1, 1925, and she grew up with |
|
the companionship of two sisters, Lillian and Earlene; she graduated |
|
from Atlanta High School at the age of 16, and she went on to secure |
|
employment as a riveter in Fort Worth and then as a lab technician |
|
with a rubber manufacturing facility in Borger; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1951, Ms. Walters answered her nation's call to |
|
duty by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force; she served as a recruiter |
|
and worked in a high-security radio section, and she was awarded the |
|
Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service while |
|
overseeing the accounting and finance office in the Aerospace |
|
Medical Division at Brooks Air Force Base; going on to serve |
|
overseas, she was assigned to a base in Germany; she completed two |
|
tours with the air force and traveled to a number of countries, |
|
including Greece; in 1971, she retired at the rank of master |
|
sergeant; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following her military career, Ms. Walters resided |
|
in North Carolina, where she worked for nine years as a clerk |
|
typist; in 1980, she returned home to Atlanta to care for her mother |
|
and two of her aunts, and she also helped tend to individuals who |
|
were sick; she counted among her favorite leisure activities |
|
reading, listening to music, and watching golf on TV, and she was an |
|
avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys; and |
|
WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Doris |
|
Walters will remember the way she touched their lives with her |
|
warmth, compassion, and generosity, and she will forever hold a |
|
treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Doris Geneva |
|
Walters and extend sincere condolences to the members of her |
|
family: to her nephews, Richard Davis and his wife, Barbara, and |
|
Robert Davis and his wife, Jan; to her cousins, Peggy Tooker, |
|
Jackie Cooksey and her husband, Carl, James Ward and his wife, |
|
Ruth, Glynda Holman, Janice McGowan and her husband, Buyck, |
|
Valerie Allen and her husband, Ron, Kent Bickham, Kyle Bickham, |
|
and Virginia Kirbo; and to her other relatives and friends; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
this day, it do so in memory of Doris Walters. |
