The bill would authorize the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to use money appropriated from the General Revenue Fund to design, construct, and erect a memorial marker required under Transportation Code, Chapter 225, Subchapter B, designating part of the highway system for a law enforcement or peace officer killed in the line of duty. The bill would take effect on September 1, 2025.
TxDOT reports that the estimated cost per pair of memorial highway signs ranges from approximately $3,600 to $50,000. The bill would authorize TxDOT to construct and install these markers using General Revenue Funds if appropriated to the department for that purpose. Because the amount and timing of legislative appropriations to TxDOT for this purpose is unknown, the fiscal impact to the State cannot be determined.
No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
