The Senate Select Committee on Veteran Affairs will meet to hear invited and public testimony on the following interim charges:

 

Protecting the Integrity of Department of Veteran Affairs Claims: Study the effectiveness of Texas' veteran claims-assistance infrastructure and the impact of the State Strike Force. Assess vulnerabilities to deceptive claims-assistance practices and make recommendations to strengthen claims assistance and protect Texas veterans from unaccredited or predatory actors.

 

Strengthening the Military-to-Civilian Transition: Review resources available to Texans leaving military service, including the federal Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and opportunities to strengthen Texas' transition support through the Texas Military Veteran Peer Network. Make recommendations to improve veterans' transition to civilian careers.

 

Monitoring: Monitor the implementation of legislation passed by the 89th Legislature within the committee's jurisdiction. Specifically, make recommendations related to:

Senate Bill 1814 (89th Legislature), relating to the creation and maintenance of an electronic database providing information on veterans' resources and benefits; and

House Bill 114 (89th Legislature), relating to the transfer of certain veteran mental health programs and plans to the Texas Veterans Commission.

 

Public testimony will follow Invited Testimony. Public testimony is limited to 2 minutes per witness.
